ISO 9000 is a group of international standards that has been developed and focuses on quality in the areas of management (quality management) and assurance (quality assurance). The standards were developed to help companies effectively document a quality system and its elements. The system also assists in the implementation and maintenance of an effective quality system. ISO 9000 was initially published in 1987. The standards are not specific to any particular industry, business, product, or service or even line of work. Rather, they focus on general principles of quality. It is believed that by implementing ISO 9000, not just gaining certification, an organization accepts a group of processes, policies and standards and can thereby improve quality. The standards were developed by the International Organization for Standardization, known as ISO. ISO draws from best practices, bodies of knowledge and information in over 91 countries.
