  Transportation can be defined in one way as ​the movement of goods or stuff from one place to another.  It may also be defined as the various means by which such movement is accomplished.  Transportation is one of the 8 forms of waste and can only be considered as value adding when it is strategically established to meet the needs of customer demand.

Transportation also includes the planning of movement, scheduling, managing and controlling any and all activities related to the method of the movement or the mode of the movement.
Examples of Transportation:

• A vendor moves or ships items to a customer.  This movement is a form of transportation.
• Inventory moves in and out of organizations.  It also moves within an organization.  Every Time inventory moves it is being "transported".

Methods of Transportation:
  Transportation modes can generally be one of five different methods which include:

1. Air - Such as planes. 
2. Road - Such as trucks, cars or bikes.
3. Water - Such as boats.
4. Rail - Such as Trains.
5. Pipeline - Typically these are fluids.

Considerations:
  Individuals and/or organizations should be cautious to use the appropriate form of transportation based on their specific needs.  Some considerations might be:

1. The needs and requests of your customer.
2. The needs and size of your product.
3. Packaging needs.
4. Costs incurred or associated with the transportation.
5. Your ability to make on-time delivery or other commitments to your customer whether internal or external.

Keep in mind that Transportation is one of the 8 forms of waste.
